The Wreck of the Nancy Michaelson
via Row2k
-Rowing is one of the original sports of the modern Olympic Games
-Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics, was a rower
-FISA, the international governing body for rowing, was the first international sports federation, founded in 1892
-Eight-man shells are about 62 feet long-that’s over 20 yards on a football field
-Singles may be as narrow as 10 inches across, weigh only 23 lbs. and stretch nearly 27 feet long
-There is no professional rowing for athletes to aspire to. This is a purely amateur sport
-The first amateur organization was a rowing club-Philadelphia’s Schuylkill Navy, founded in 1858
-From 1920 to 1956, the USA won the gold medal in the men’s eight at every Olympic Games
And I’m like it’s better than y-oars.
